I am finally, belatedly, attempting to learn how to drive. And finding it absolutely terrifying. D: Is this normal? How does anyone manage to do this on a regular basis without being a nervous wreck? D:
I don't know you, I came across your journal and this entry while aimlessly clicking on Random Journal on the front page.
As someone who's never managed to get a driver's license because I find driving a car extremely stressful, I can tell you that you are not alone. I know at least two other people who never drive because it makes them too anxious.
I don't want to discourage you from learning how to drive. I also know someone who doesn't like to drive, but chooses to do it anyway because she needs to, and I'm sure there are plenty of folks out there who have been able to get over their fear of driving, even if they had a hard time at first. I just wanted to say that it's okay to be scared. It may not be the same for everyone, but I'd still say it's normal because many people have experienced something similar.
I wish you the best of luck with your driving lessons.
Thank you for your words of reassurance that the anxiety is normal, I appreciate it. :)
Most people I know that drive seem to like going at speed, whereas I'm really finding it very nerve-racking, and it took several lessons to even coax me into second gear (which was met with incredulity and gentle teasing). I'm trying to persevere with lessons as my partner doesn't drive either, and it would be useful if one of us could. I put it off for many years and kind of feel that if I don't make the effort now, I never will. It's early days yet, but I'm hopeful that it'll become easier with time.
